Shillong: Meghalaya has launched a series of urban transformation projects in Tura valued at over Rs 150 crore. These initiatives focus on upgrading local infrastructure, public amenities, and tourism facilities to improve overall living standards in the town. The projects are part of a multi-year effort to prepare Tura for the 39th National Games in 2027.
Key developments include the complete redevelopment of Najing Bazar into a modern commercial hub. The updated site will house new market spaces, hotels, parking areas, and designated vending zones. Additionally, a Rs 51.21 crore complex in Dakopgre will feature a multi-level parking facility for 200 vehicles, three cinema halls, a gaming zone, and a food court.
The government is also refurbishing the SMELC Complex to include an Art and Culture Promenade, a museum, a children’s park, and dedicated centers for youth and active ageing. To improve urban safety, authorities are installing a town-wide network of LED streetlights and CCTV surveillance cameras.
On the administrative side, the town introduced a new municipal mobile app to streamline civic services. Officials also implemented a locality-based waste management grading system to boost sanitation. During the launch, the government distributed sanction letters to local artists under the Chief Minister’s Artists Engagement Scheme, signaling a wider effort to support the region’s cultural and economic growth.
