Agartala: Tripura is fighting back against rising human-elephant conflict. Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma announced five new anti-depredation camps in the Khowai district to protect residents. The state also dug 9 kilometres of protective trenches. A new 24-hour helpline is live.
These measures aim to shield villages from crop damage and physical threats. The minister officially opened the camps at Maiganga, North Krishnapur, Chakmaghat, Ghilatali, and East Laxmipur during the 77th state-level Van Mahotsav. The event took place at Chitrangada Kala Kendra in the Teliamura subdivision.
Debbarma shifted focus toward long-term environmental success. He emphasized that planting trees is not enough. Every sapling requires consistent care to survive. The minister noted the state’s involvement in the national Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign, which saw 20 lakh saplings planted across Tripura last year.
"Plant trees, save trees, save yourself," Debbarma told the crowd.
The Forest Department is currently managing several development initiatives. These include the Indo-German Project, the JICA Project, and the Integrated Green Development Programme. Officials stated these efforts provide both conservation results and new jobs.
Chief Whip and Teliamura MLA Kalyani Saha Roy joined the proceedings as the chief guest. She called for a mass movement toward tree planting. During the ceremony, the department issued revolving fund cheques to five self-help groups from Mungiakami. They also honoured Joint Forest Management Committees, local organisations, and individuals for their conservation work. Winners of a 2026 biodiversity photography competition received recognition as well.
The event concluded with the distribution of free saplings. Attendees toured 16 exhibition stalls highlighting sustainable livelihood and forest protection programs. Other notable guests included MLA Pinaki Das Chowdhury, Khowai Zilla Parishad Vice-Chairman Satyendra Chandra Das, and local municipal officials.
