Guwahati: Guwahati police busted a rental car theft ring. Officers tracked a vehicle headed for Nagaland to be sold illegally. Six people are now in custody. The Hatigaon Police Station team launched the operation after the owner reported the rental car, registration AS-01-GN-2716, was never returned.
Cops used GPS tracking to hunt the targets. They worked with units at the Titabor and Mariani Police Stations to box the suspects in. The sting ended with six arrests. Police identified the men as Kaustav Jyoti Saikia, Bhaskar Barua, Prandip Baruah, Anurag Choudhary, Abhinash Saikia, and Bikash Das.
The suspects hail from Golaghat and Mariani. Officers seized the original rental car along with two other suspect vehicles: a Bolero Pickup marked AS-22-AC-0643 and a Mahindra Thar registered as AR-01-P-3745. The investigation is far from over. Police are now probing the wider operation to see if the group runs a larger racket. An official stated, "Further investigation is underway to ascertain whether the group was involved in a wider vehicle theft and illegal sale network."
