Gangtok: Sushma Tamang, a Chemistry teacher at PM SHRI Government Senior Secondary School in Dikling, shared a lighthearted moment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. The interaction occurred ahead of the 2026 National Teachers Awards ceremony. The talk shifted from her work to public speaking tips.
Modi asked for advice on becoming a better orator. Tamang cited confidence and practice as the top requirements for success. The teacher then confessed she felt nervous. "Sorry, Sir. Seeing your aura, I became a little doubtful," she said.
Modi joked back immediately. He asked if an aspiring speaker should avoid having an aura altogether. Tamang quickly confirmed his presence was significant. Modi teased that a strong aura might distract the audience from the actual speech. Tamang replied, "People will keep looking at you anyway."
Beyond the joke, Tamang discussed her classroom philosophy. She goes past standard Chemistry lessons to mentor students in environmental education and public speaking. Her work prepares pupils for state, national, and international forums. This award win brings national attention to her efforts in Sikkim.
