Gangtok: A fabricated notification circulating on social media has sparked significant concern across Sikkim by falsely claiming that the Union Ministry of Home Affairs is planning to merge Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Terai, and Dooars with the state. The forged document, dated May 10, 2026, suggested that a preliminary review was underway following census and delimitation procedures and that the central government had invited West Bengal and Sikkim to discuss the matter.

Political factions in Sikkim have moved quickly to dismiss the report as entirely fake. The state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party condemned the document as a provocative attempt to incite communal tension and unrest. Party leaders have vowed to pursue strict legal action against those responsible for creating or spreading the misinformation.

The legal cell of the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha identified several red flags within the text, including inconsistent drafting patterns, the absence of digital verification, and an improper signature. Officials confirmed that no such announcement exists within any authorized government record or public release from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Given the history of regional autonomy demands in Darjeeling and Kalimpong, the misinformation gained rapid traction online. Local authorities are now urging the public to ignore the rumors and rely exclusively on official communication channels as they work to hold the creators of the forgery accountable.
