Gangtok: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang opened a new Tibetan Community Centre at Chandmari in Gangtok on Monday. The event coincided with the 91st birthday of the 14th Dalai Lama. It signals strong ties between the state and local Tibetans.
Construction cost 8.82 crore rupees. Work started in January and wrapped up months early. The building features a 400-seat auditorium and dining hall. It also includes office space for eight Tibetan organizations plus shops to generate income. The center solves the long-standing problem of rain forcing outdoor events to cancel.
Palden Thendup from the Central Tibetan Administration attended the ceremony alongside state officials. Tamang praised the spiritual leader during his speech. He told the crowd: "The Tibetan spiritual leader's teachings of peace, compassion, non-violence and service to humanity have inspired millions around the world and continue to guide the people of Sikkim."
The Department of Culture and Heritage managed the project. Tamang thanked them for finishing the work ahead of schedule and under budget. He vowed to keep building community spaces for all ethnic groups in the state. He urged citizens to live by the Dalai Lama's values. Actions matter more than rituals.
