Gangtok: Sikkim recently celebrated its 51st Statehood Day, with Governor Om Prakash Mathur hailing the Himalayan state as a premier national model for sustainable growth, inclusive development, and environmental stewardship. Reflecting on the state's integration with India in 1975, the Governor emphasized that this historic milestone established a strong foundation for constitutional governance and long term economic prosperity.
As the nation's first fully organic state, Sikkim continues to gain global recognition for its commitment to biodiversity conservation and climate resilience. Governor Mathur pointed to key social welfare and environmental initiatives such as the Mero Rukh Mero Santati and Shishu Samriddhi Yojana as evidence of the state's holistic approach to development. Following the devastating 2023 flash floods, the government has prioritized infrastructure recovery, notably through the rehabilitation of Chungthang village, which now includes a new multipurpose gymnasium to foster youth engagement and resilience.
Strategically positioned along borders with China, Nepal, and Bhutan, Sikkim is actively upgrading its infrastructure through the Vibrant Villages Programme and Bharat Ranbhoomi Darshan. These efforts have reframed border communities from being the nation's last outposts to being recognized as India's first villages. This strategic focus is complemented by robust efforts to bolster local entrepreneurship, particularly for women, and the growth of the MSME sector.
The state has also seen significant advancements in public welfare, with marked improvements in specialized healthcare services including oncology and cardiology. By integrating AYUSH systems with modern medical practices, Sikkim is positioning itself as a holistic wellness hub. Meanwhile, the education sector is undergoing a transformation aimed at improving foundational learning and STEM literacy, ensuring that the next generation is well equipped for future challenges.
