Gangtok: In alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal for fiscal prudence and fuel conservation, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang announced a comprehensive set of austerity measures on May 14. These decisions were finalized during a high-level administrative meeting with Cabinet ministers, MLAs, and top police and departmental officials, aiming to enhance administrative efficiency and ensure the optimal use of public resources.

A significant portion of the initiative focuses on vehicle regulation. The state has implemented a one-year ban on the purchase of new government vehicles, with the exception of emergency and police services. Furthermore, the Chief Minister has reduced his own official motorcade by 50 percent, and pilot vehicles assigned to the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly have been withdrawn. To further curb fuel consumption, the government will mandate a 20 percent reduction in fuel usage for vehicles assigned to ministers and MLAs and implement an odd-even vehicle rotation system across all districts. Emergency services remain exempt from these traffic restrictions.

The government is also promoting a digital-first approach, encouraging officials to utilize public transport, virtual meetings, and pooled vehicle systems. Officials are urged to walk for local meetings whenever possible. Additional travel restrictions have been placed on inter-district and out-of-state journeys, and all Officers on Special Duty and Chairpersons are required to remain stationed within their constituencies. Foreign travel for government officials has been suspended for one year, and official vehicles are prohibited from operating on weekends.

To complement these measures, the administration has introduced a policy allowing 50 percent of government employees to work from home where feasible. Chief Minister Tamang described these steps as necessary, temporary actions for the collective interest of the state and the nation, with formal notifications from the Home Department expected to follow shortly.
