Gangtok: Sikkim filmmaker Tribeny Rai is preparing for the highly anticipated theatrical release of her film, Shape of Momo, which is scheduled to hit screens across India and Nepal on May 29. After a successful journey through various domestic and international film festivals, the project is finally reaching the region that served as its primary inspiration.
Rai noted that while the film has earned significant acclaim on the festival circuit, bringing the story to her home audience feels uniquely significant. She expressed a sense of nervous excitement about how viewers in Sikkim and the Himalayan belt will perceive the movie's depiction of local family dynamics, social realities, and regional relationships.
The film follows a woman who returns to her native village after living in the city for many years. Through this homecoming, the narrative examines the changing bonds between family members, featuring characters such as a lighthearted grandmother and a pair of sisters. Rai emphasized that the movie is intended for family audiences, noting that the story balances emotional depth with moments of humor.
As the release date approaches, the project has garnered support from Mumbai based media collaborators, but Rai stressed that local backing remains the most meaningful. She is encouraging the community to watch the film together, hoping that the story will linger in the minds of viewers and encourage reflection on their own personal lives and relationships long after they leave the theater.
