Gangtok: The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) hit back at critics on Friday, July 3. The party denied any secret political deals with the Bharatiya Janata Party. Officials rejected claims that they traded MLAs for favors. They called the accusations lies.
SDF spokesperson Yojna Khaling Rai dismissed the rumors as a political smear campaign. She argued these claims ignored how Indian politics actually works. Defections happen everywhere. "The SDF has never sold its MLAs to the BJP, nor has it ever entered into a political alliance with the BJP," Rai stated.
Tensions flared after SDF president Pawan Chamling warned that the state must not become another Manipur. His party claims this was a warning about instability. The SDF accuses the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha of cozying up to the BJP. They insist they protected Sikkim for 25 years while in power.
Working with the federal government remains a requirement, according to the party. They stated that having a working relationship with Delhi does not mean they formed a coalition. The SDF currently holds zero seats in the 32-member Sikkim Legislative Assembly. They claim they still stand for the rights and identity of the local people.
