Gangtok: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has adopted a symbolic approach to government austerity by walking over two kilometers from his official residence, Mintokgang, to attend official functions in Gangtok. This initiative, observed on May 15 and again on Monday, May 18, serves to highlight the state government's commitment to fuel conservation and responsible public spending.

These actions align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent call for prudent fiscal management and reduced energy consumption, prompted by the ongoing crisis in West Asia. To support these goals, the Sikkim government has introduced several initiatives, including stricter limitations on official vehicle movement and the enhancement of public transport services.

During Monday's proceedings, Chief Minister Tamang clarified new traffic policies, announcing that private vehicles will be exempt from odd-even restrictions on Saturdays and Sundays, though the mandate remains in effect for government vehicles. Following his walk to the Manan Kendra venue, the Chief Minister utilized a taxi to return to his residence, further demonstrating a practical approach to minimizing fuel usage. Press secretary Yougan Tamang confirmed that these gestures are intended to set a leading example for the state's broader sustainability and austerity drive.
