Gangtok: Sikkim marked its 51st Statehood Day on May 16, with Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang declaring that the Himalayan state is entering a transformative era. Reflecting on the five decades since its 1975 merger with India, Tamang emphasized the state's evolution into a prominent model for environmental conservation, peace, and inclusive progress.
During his address, the Chief Minister noted the national recognition of Sikkim's achievements, specifically highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit during the state's Golden Jubilee celebrations. The Prime Minister lauded the region as the heaven of the East, commending its commitment to organic farming, cleanliness, and sustainable development. Projects valued at over 4,000 crore rupees were announced or inaugurated during that high profile visit.
Looking toward the future, the state government is prioritizing education, healthcare, and infrastructure improvements to foster youth empowerment. Significant investments are being funneled into sports, including the revival of the State Sports Academy at Paljor Stadium and the creation of new facilities like the Tarundeep Rai Archery Academy, a boxing academy dedicated to Jas Lal Pradhan, and the Swarna Jayanti Sports and Cultural Complex.
Economic diversification remains a central goal, with the Chief Minister reporting a dramatic rise in the local business ecosystem. Registered MSME units have surged from approximately 250 in 2019 to over 35,000 by 2026. Furthermore, vocational training initiatives have facilitated the placement of more than 11,000 candidates. The government is also expanding its international reach through the Chief Minister ELEVATE scheme, which recently helped secure nursing positions for 13 trained professionals in Germany, reflecting a new commitment to global mobility and entrepreneurship.
