Shillong: The Assam Royal Global University observed World Environment Day with a series of community engagement programs involving over 200 NCC cadets, environmental experts, and local activists. The event featured tree planting drives and educational sessions designed to promote sustainability and social responsibility.
Brigadier N C Khuman, Group Commander of NCC Group Headquarters in Guwahati, addressed the cadets and emphasized the need for personal accountability. He stated, “Taking care of the environment does not only mean plantation; it is only one part of the responsibility. We must control pollution and reduce our reckless consumption of natural resources like trees and land.” He encouraged the students to serve as ambassadors for environmental development.
Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Director of WWF India for Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, highlighted the escalating global climate crisis and urged participants to adopt the five Rs of waste management: reduce, reuse, recycle, refuse, and repurpose. Prof. A K Buragohain, Vice Chancellor of RGU, also spoke on the necessity of collective action, advocating for simpler lifestyles and a closer connection with nature.
The university's NSS cell complemented these efforts by hosting the Save Bharalu Dialogue, which included contributions from environmental advocates such as Manoranjan Das and Dr. Robin Mazumdar. The day concluded with community consultations focused on how students can drive social transformation through environmental stewardship.
