Shillong: Ri-Bhoi district will go dry this Independence Day. Deputy Commissioner Dr. Abhishek Saini issued a formal order on August 6 mandating the shutdown of all alcohol-related businesses across the region for the entire day on August 15, 2026.

The mandate hits hard. It covers every IMFL retail shop, hotel bar, bonded warehouse, and bottling unit in the district. Authorities also shuttered breweries, country-made spirit shops, outstills, and canteens under Section 324(A) of the Meghalaya Excise Act.

The administration demands strict adherence to the rules. According to the official directive, the closure is necessary "in view of the Independence Day celebrations." Business owners must keep their doors locked until the holiday concludes.
