Residents challenge legality of JHADC toll gate

Shillong: Locals are fighting back against a new check gate. The Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council dropped the structure on a busy National Highway near Nongtalang on June 4. The gate sits directly on the road connecting Amlarem and Dawki.

Residents want the state government to step in. They are demanding a clear answer on whether the district council has the legal authority to run toll points on national roads. People are tired of paying these charges. One local resident stated, "Locals have urged the state government to clarify whether Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) are permitted to operate check gates on National Highways."

This council operation currently forces drivers to pay up. The public wants to know if this is legal or just another cash grab.
