Gangtok: President Droupadi Murmu praised the role of education in empowering women during the 7th convocation ceremony of Sikkim University in Gangtok. The President highlighted that women made up 70 percent of the medal recipients, with 199 female students earning gold and silver awards out of 285 total honors. She attributed this success to the students' determination and talent, calling it a clear indicator of how education transforms lives.
Addressing the graduates, Murmu offered guidance for their future careers, encouraging them to trust their own abilities, collaborate with others, and work toward the goal of a developed India. The ceremony marked the graduation of 13,782 students across various programs for the 2023, 2024, and 2025 academic cycles.
The President, who is currently on a three-day visit to the state, also attended the launch of the Aama Didi Bahini Bus Sewa. This new transport initiative in Gangtok serves only women and is managed entirely by female staff. Murmu expressed her appreciation for the project and commended Sikkim for its environmental leadership, specifically noting its status as an organic, plastic-free, and litter-free state.
During her address, the President urged Sikkim University to prioritize the study of local culture and the preservation of endangered languages through its specialized research center. She also welcomed the inclusion of climate change and glaciology in the curriculum, noting that these subjects are vital for addressing modern environmental challenges. While in the region, the President had originally planned to visit the Nathu La border post to meet with military personnel, but officials confirmed that the trip was canceled because of poor weather conditions.
