Guwahati: A four-year-old child is dead in Assam's Nagaon district after locals say a woman threw the victim into a pond. Villagers detained the suspect, Mashakin Khatun, inside her home before calling the authorities. Juria Police arrived to take Khatun into custody and move the child's body to Nagaon for a post-mortem examination. Police are investigating the motive, stating, "The findings of the post-mortem examination, along with the ongoing investigation, are expected to provide greater clarity on the incident."

Separately, police in Guwahati are looking into the death of 22-year-old Neha Saikia. Her landlord found her hanging in her rented room in the Shilpukhuri area on Tuesday morning. Saikia, who worked at a Tanishq showroom, hailed from the 2 No. Saikia Chuburi village in the Udalguri district. Neighbors reported a party at the apartment lasting until late Monday night.

Chandmari Police reached the scene and transferred the body to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for an autopsy. Investigators are examining the party and other potential angles to determine exactly what happened. No cause of death has been confirmed yet.
