Poisoning Death Toll Hits 12 in Shillong

Shillong: Another dog died in Shillong this week, pushing the total body count from a poisoning spree to 12. The animal passed away Wednesday morning after a rapid health decline despite five days of medical treatment. It stopped eating and suffered from extreme thirst before it died.

The caregiver observed the dog struggling to eat, noting it only accepted small portions of meat and chicken soup. Authorities suspect kidney failure took the dog down. No post-mortem took place. The local Inspector-in-Charge told the caregiver to bury the remains immediately to stop any spread of infection.

Animal welfare groups are pushing for accountability as the death toll climbs. A separate hit-and-run in the Rilbong-Laban area killed another dog. Witnesses reported that a Nano car struck the animal and fled, sparking outrage among residents. One caregiver stated, "The dog completed a five-day course of treatment for poisoning before coming under their care for recovery."
