Shillong: The Dympep region in Sohra is set to host the Northeast’s first skywalk, a major infrastructure project aimed at drawing more visitors to the area. Construction on the 40-metre-long structure began in November of last year and has already reached 20 percent completion. Local legislator Gavin Miguel Mylliem announced the progress today, noting that the project is expected to reach its conclusion by late 2027.
Mylliem emphasized that the skywalk is a unique addition to the region and expects it to serve as a significant catalyst for local tourism. Addressing potential ecological concerns, he explained that environmental safeguards were integrated into the design phase. Consultants responsible for the detailed project report ensured that all environmental considerations were addressed to prevent any negative impact on the local surroundings.
Beyond the skywalk, another major initiative is moving forward in the area. The Nohkalikai tourism project, funded under the PM-DevINE scheme with a budget of approximately Rs 38 crore, has successfully completed its tendering process. A contractor has been selected for the job, and physical work is scheduled to begin within the next few days.
