North Eastern Council Meeting to Prioritize Regional Development and Tourism

Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced that the upcoming annual North Eastern Council meeting will focus on enhancing regional cooperation. The plenary session, held in Shillong this Thursday, will bring together governors and chief ministers from across the Northeastern states to review progress on development task forces formed by the Ministry for Development of North Eastern Region.

Discussions will center on specific sectors such as trade, youth affairs, and tourism. Sangma emphasized a shift in strategy for the region, noting that Meghalaya plans to push for the promotion of the Northeast as a single, unified tourism destination. This approach aims to help travelers experience multiple states seamlessly rather than visiting individual locations in isolation.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to attend the sessions to address broader policy matters alongside the DoNER Minister. Sangma also confirmed a series of upcoming high-level ministerial visits to the state, including the Union Health Minister on June 5 and the Union Finance Minister within the next ten days. The Chief Minister also intends to represent the state at the NITI Aayog meeting chaired by the Prime Minister on June 11.
