Nine Stranded in Border Limbo Between India and Bangladesh

Shillong: Nine people are currently stranded in the no-man’s land along the India-Bangladesh border in the South Salmara-Mankachar district of Assam. The group was intercepted by the Border Security Force while allegedly attempting to cross into India, leaving them stuck in the border strip as their citizenship remains unverified.

While social media reports in Bangladesh suggest the individuals were pushed back from Indian territory, local authorities have remained quiet regarding the specific circumstances of the standoff. Officials are currently working to determine the group's nationality to finalize their next steps.

Border Security Force personnel are engaging with the Border Guard Bangladesh to resolve the situation through established diplomatic channels. Regarding these types of incidents, border management officials stated, "such cases are often complicated by a lack of identification documents, which delays repatriation and leaves individuals caught between the two nations."

This situation reflects a similar recent incident in Meghalaya’s South West Garo Hills district, where a Bangladeshi national was stranded after authorities refused to accept his return. These cases highlight the persistent logistical and diplomatic hurdles associated with managing undocumented movement across the international border.
