Guwahati: A new report from the Union Ministry of Education highlights a widening gap in school performance across northeast India. The 2024-25 Performance Grading Index 2.0 ranks Assam as one of the region's top performers, while Meghalaya currently holds the lowest score in the entire country.

Assam achieved a score of 593.6 out of 1,000, earning a Prachesta-3 grade after a notable 82-point increase over the previous year. The state performed particularly well in governance, achieving an Uttam-3 grade that puts it on par with national leaders like Maharashtra and Odisha. In contrast, Meghalaya fell into the lowest possible Akanshi-3 band with a score of 448. The state struggled across most metrics, recording the lowest scores in the region for learning outcomes, infrastructure, and teacher training.

Other states in the region showed mixed results. Sikkim emerged as the second-best performer with a score of 603.3 and the highest infrastructure rating in the northeast. Arunachal Pradesh saw significant progress, climbing over 65 points, while Tripura, Manipur, and Nagaland each moved up by one grade band. Mizoram remains an outlier, maintaining a high literacy rate yet scoring only 507.9 on the index, suggesting that traditional literacy metrics do not always align with modern assessments of school quality.

Across the region, the Access domain, which measures school enrolment and student retention, provided the most consistent signs of progress. While most states showed uneven gains, the data reflects a general upward trend for the region, with the stark exception of Meghalaya.
