Itanagar: Dominic Sangma, a National Award-winning filmmaker and head of screenwriting at the Film and Television Institute of India, suffered an assault in Itanagar on Wednesday evening. The attack occurred near the Jollang-Rakap road around 6:30 pm. Sangma had been walking home when he spotted two intoxicated men wielding bamboo sticks and harassing students.
He stepped in to help. The men turned on him. They struck the filmmaker with their fists and bamboo sticks. Karry Padu, the filmmaker’s wife, confirmed the confrontation in a social media post: "My husband was attacked by some local boys around the Rakap village near FTII JOTE today by two young boys."
The violence did not stop with the filmmaker. The attackers reportedly assaulted an FTII security guard and four students, unlawfully restraining them during the clash. The suspects are Techi Nanu and Techi Sanjay, both residents of Rakap village.
Police registered an FIR at the Balijan station under Sections 115(2), 117(2), 126, and 351 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Investigators are currently reviewing the incident. Sangma is a Meghalaya native celebrated for his Garo-language work, including the award-winning film Rapture.
