Kohima: The All Sümi Students Union held a memorial in Zunheboto on September 10. They marked 71 years since the first Indo-Naga battle at the Hoshepu ADM EAC Headquarters. Naga Students Federation President Mteisuding Heraang attended as the guest of honor.
Heraang argued for a shift in language. He wants everyone to call it the Naga-Indo battle instead. He claimed this better reflects the Naga perspective. The federation is also looking to adopt this term for ongoing political talks. He urged leaders to keep protecting the site. The site is a key piece of their political journey.
Dr. Vihuto A Sümi of the Sümi Hoho spoke on the heavy toll taken on his people. Many joined the Naga army by force or by choice. Soldiers burned down local schools to pressure young men into service. He said they must have the courage to acknowledge these difficult chapters. The area remains vital to their political aspirations.
Local leaders pushed for official recognition. Ghokiho H Zhimomi of the Aghunato Area Kukami Hoho suggested upgrading the Aghunato ADC Headquarters to a district level. He cited the area’s historical weight as the primary reason. He also called for an inclusive memorial that transcends individual factions.
Akükaü Hetotho S Zhimomi of the Sümi Kukami Hoho addressed the crowd regarding the shared hardships of the community. He noted that villages suffered through destroyed property and the loss of livestock. Leaders want the youth to look past tribal lines. As he noted, "We must remember not only the battle itself, but also the sacrifices, suffering, and courage of all those who lived through those difficult times."
The event included a traditional war dance from Hoshepu village. Various student unions from the Ao, Angami, Chakhesang, Lotha, Pochury, Rengma, and Zeliangrong communities sent representatives to offer solidarity speeches.
