Kohima: International University Nagaland (IUN) finished a major research project mapping ancient hill settlement military engineering. The work spans 20 chapters titled The Architecture of Defence: Fortification Engineering and Village Gate Geometry in Pre Colonial Nagaland.
Founder chancellor Dr. Priyaranjan Trivedi and Academic Staff College director Dr. Zavise Rume led the effort. They decoded the physics, strategic botany, and structural mathematics used to build highland strongholds. Rume noted that the framework elevates traditional heritage from folklore to recognized science, analyzing ridge line settlements, load bearing mechanics of village gates known as Kharu, and strategic use of toxic hedgerows.
Registrar Dr. Roopam Bachhil managed the project. He pointed to global academic implications, noting that the framework maps distinct regional typologies. These range from Angami and Chakhesang terraced stone walls to Ao and Lotha ridge layouts, plus the citadel style fortresses of Eastern Konyak and Phom Angh palaces.
The study also tracks how defenses shifted during British encounters. It moves from rigid stone construction to mobile guerrilla warfare. The 20 chapters detail topographical strategy, perimeter mechanics, village gate engineering, internal sectorization, tactical materials, comparative typologies, and legacy analysis. It even includes digital 3D reconstruction blueprints for preservation.
IUN thanked the cultural custodians and village elders who helped build the record. The university intends to bridge ancient wisdom with modern structural science. The book arrives on July 25, 2026, at the campus in Dimapur.
