Kohima: The Joint Coordination Committee of Pre-Right to Education Teachers in Nagaland is pushing for a break from the Nagaland Teacher Eligibility Test. They want the Chief Minister to lobby the central government for an exemption for staff hired before the 2009 Right to Education Act took effect. The committee met with Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio on October 10 to present their case. They highlighted the stress on veteran teachers who faced different rules when they first started their jobs.
Chief Minister Rio listened to the delegation. He promised to raise the issue with his Council of Ministers and local MLAs. He also agreed to keep a direct line open regarding the state's next steps. The teachers hope this dialogue leads to a fair deal.
The All Nagaland School Teachers Association has officially pulled out of a planned October 17 mass hunger strike as a result. They represent a key affiliate of the School Teachers Federation of India. The group stated, "Taking into consideration the assurance given by the Hon'ble Chief Minister, ANSTA has decided to repose its trust and confidence in the leadership of the State Government and allow the matter the opportunity to receive due consideration."
ANSTA emphasized their move is not a slight against the federation. They remain dedicated to teacher welfare. The group is now waiting for the government to turn these words into actual policy.
