Kohima: Nagaland marked World Rabies Day on September 28 under the theme Stronger Together. Officials held awareness drives in Kohima, Wokha, and Peren. They pushed for better pet care and routine vaccinations. The effort aims to stop the spread of fatal, preventable rabies.
Kohima hosted free dog vaccinations at the local Veterinary Hospital. Deputy Commissioner B. Henok Buchem warned owners about roaming dogs. He plans to open a dog shelter by mid-October. The Kohima Municipal Council will also start vaccination camps in all 19 wards twice a year. B. Henok Buchem stated, "My dog is my responsibility."
Senior Superintendent of Police Krodi Rhetso pushed for community action during the event. The Chief Veterinary Office, SPCA, and the Department of Health and Family Welfare organized the programme. Dr. Ketholenuo Metha chaired the event while Dr. Nounengulie Kire served as the resource person.
The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services ran a similar event in Wokha. Epidemiologist Dr. Khesheli Awomi spoke about immediate wound care after bites. She confirmed that government hospitals stock free vaccines and serum. The session included local officials Dr. Kehosenu Sakhrie and Dr. Khuzovinu Richa.
Peren held its programme at Sainik School Punglwa. Experts from the College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry joined forces with the CMO office. They taught cadets how the disease spreads. Their goal is zero human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030.
