Nagaland Students Defy Bias, Excel in Government Schools

Kohima: Nagaland government school students are proving they can outshine their private school peers. High-achieving pupils recently gathered in Kohima to accept awards, marking a major win for state-run education. The Directorate of School Education honored the top three students across several streams and recognized 22 schools for hitting a perfect 100% pass rate.

Sreeniti Mahapatra of GHS Yachem finished in the top 19 for the 2026 HSLC exams. She defied common stereotypes about rural education. "Standing here today as one of the Top 19 achievers is proof that students from government schools can excel and compete with the very best when given the right guidance and opportunities," Mahapatra said. She credited her success to dedicated teachers who provided free coaching and extra guidance outside of normal hours.

Pooja Bharti from PM Shri GHSS, Chümoukedima, ranked in the top 7 for the HSSLC Arts stream. She argued that talent is not restricted to specific institutions. Hard work matters more than labels. Bharti believes students should use their education to fuel positive change in their home communities.

Moaakum T Longkumer took a top 10 spot in the HSSLC Science stream. He pointed to his teachers as the core pillars of his success. The school provided strong laboratory support. This helped him connect theory to real science. Nagaland government officials attended the ceremony to celebrate these results and push for continued growth in the classroom.
