Kohima: Nagaland is pushing into the medicinal plant market. Officials held the 11th Ayurveda Day at Vihokhu village in Niuland on Wednesday. The event marked the launch of a new distribution and cultivation project for Piper longum and Piper retrofractum. S. Supongmeren Jamir, Lok Sabha MP and Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee president, attended as the special guest.
This pilot project spans three districts: Zunheboto, Mon, and Niuland. Local climate conditions support these crops. Jamir noted that previous attempts to grow coffee and ginger hit a wall because of poor market access. This time, Dabur India Ltd. agreed to buy the harvest. Jamir told the crowd, "The initiative could also encourage further discovery and value addition of medicinal plants traditionally used in the State."
The plan aims to boost farmer income and protect traditional knowledge. Jamir called on police, district officials, and farmers to coordinate for a successful rollout. If Niuland succeeds, the state will likely push expansion into other districts. Younger generations are encouraged to join the effort.
Dr. Tiakaba Jamir, in-charge of the Institute of Ayurveda and Homoeopathy in Dimapur, spoke on the theme of Ayurveda for a Healthier Tomorrow. Dabur India Principal Scientist Jangaiah Mangalaram guided attendees through cultivation techniques. Dr. T. Bendangtula chaired the event, with Vihokhu village GB Kuhovi Zhimomi offering welcome remarks. Pastor Charlie Chophy delivered the invocation, while Dr. Seyiekhrietuo John gave the vote of thanks. The session ended with a dedicatory prayer led by Dr. Vebuzo Keyho from the Chakhesang Baptist Church in Diphupar.
