Nagaland Governor Pushes Cooperatives for Economic Growth

Kohima: Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav called on the state to modernize its cooperative movement. He wants tech upgrades, more youth involvement, and better support for women-led businesses. The governor spoke Friday at Kohima’s Lok Bhavan to mark the International Day of Cooperatives and five years of the Ministry of Cooperation.

The movement fuels self-reliance. It boosts mutual support. Yadav highlighted Nagaland’s potential in dairy, fisheries, and piggery, alongside organic farming and handloom goods. He credited groups like the Nagaland State Cooperative Bank for helping farmers reach new markets.

Cooperation minister Jacob Zhimomi noted the sector gained momentum under Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2021. The goal remains a self-reliant India. Zhimomi said the state is pushing digital transactions to clean up the books and cut out middlemen. He noted, "The cooperative sector would play a pivotal role in Nagaland’s economic development."

Cooperation secretary Orenthung Lotha reported that 231 Primary Agricultural Credit Societies are now computerized. This shift improves service and transparency. Lotha also wants to revive dormant societies by matching them to current market demands. The governor finished the day by virtually opening four new model cooperative offices across the state.
