Nagaland Department of Social Welfare Highlights Elderly Artisan Skills

Kohima: Nine elderly artisans gathered in Kohima on October 1 to display traditional Naga crafts. The Department of Social Welfare organized the exhibition for the International Day of Older Persons. Elders from Kohima, Wokha, Mokokchung, and Phek districts showcased woodcraft, jewelry, and Naga raincoats. The work helps younger generations appreciate local traditions.

Eighty-eight-year-old Imchatemsu, a retired transport inspector from Mokokchung, demonstrated woodcraft alongside Tumohio, 72, of Wokha. Three men from Kohima also displayed woodcraft skills: Zevolhoulie Terhase, 50, Diezelie Terhase, 83, and Zakievi Terhase, 83. Social Welfare Director Tosheli Zhimomi said the move highlights the skills of elderly persons. She added the initiative is about more than just craft. "The initiative sought to recognize and provide a platform for the skills of elderly persons while also helping younger generations understand and appreciate the traditional crafts of the Nagas," Zhimomi stated.

Suwala, 75, from Mokokchung, and Pezano Chasie, 81, from Kohima, presented traditional jewelry. Wetezou Chirhah, 60, and Lhikoweu Chirhah, 47, represented Phek district with their Naga rain coat work. Data shows the state's elder population reaches 1,39,494 individuals. That accounts for 7 percent of the state total, based on the 2011 Census.
