Kohima: Doctors at the Naga Hospital Authority Kohima performed a brain tumor surgery using a Cavitron Ultrasonic Aspirator. This marks the first time a government hospital in Nagaland has used this technology. Surgeons also tackled a second major operation involving a patient with gall bladder cancer and liver involvement. Both patients are recovering well after the procedures on September 25.
A Guwahati-based firm, IndiGra, provided the device for a demonstration. The machine uses ultrasonic energy to break down tissue while protecting nearby blood vessels and healthy organs. Dr. Khyothungo Yanthan, the hospital neurosurgeon, noted the delicate nature of brain surgery. He stated, "Since the tissues of the brain are very delicate, we cannot retract them. This machine helps us shear and remove the tumour while preferentially leaving the normal tissues and blood vessels around it."
The CUSA hardware costs roughly Rs 1 crore. It requires specialized maintenance and trained staff to operate. NHAK currently has the qualified specialists to run this gear, but they lack permanent access to the equipment. Dr. Yanthan pushed for future procurement of the device to stop patients from traveling outside the state for care. He said, "If we have the equipment here, we can provide the treatment here itself."
The hospital currently keeps the patients under observation. The neurosurgery patient spent time in the ICU for monitoring. Officials hope these successful surgeries set a new standard for advanced medical care in the region.
