Shillong: Martin Luther Christian University held its inaugural Professional Induction Ceremony for allied healthcare students on Monday. The event took place at the Asom Kristin Kendra Auditorium in Dhanketi, Shillong. It marks the formal start for 442 undergraduate and postgraduate students entering the medical field.
This ceremony follows the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions Act of 2021. The law sets national standards for training and practice. Additional Chief Secretary Sampath Kumar served as the chief guest for the session. He highlighted the need for allied healthcare to bolster the medical infrastructure of the state.
Kumar told the new students, "look beyond technical skills and prioritise compassion, ethics, and community service." He also pointed to the high employment rate of past graduates as evidence of the school's success. The government intends to pour resources into adolescent and childhood development to ensure a healthier population.
The university currently trains students in medical imaging, optometry, nutrition, and dietetics. Other programs include surgical technology, physician assistant studies, and medical laboratory technology. Alumni Nancy B Kharkongor and Balumhunshisha Nongstein spoke at the event. They pushed the students to embrace hard work and firm determination. Dr Rennie O Lakadong, who leads the State Allied and Healthcare Council, attended alongside various academic officials.
