Aizawl: Mizoram officials are cracking down on medicine dealers flooding the state with illicit pharmaceutical drugs. Health Minister Lalrinpuii issued a stern warning Monday following an inter-ministerial meeting in Aizawl. Dealers caught peddling codeine-based cough syrup without prescriptions face immediate license cancellation. New permit applications will now face heavy scrutiny.

The meeting included Excise Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar and representatives from the Central Young Mizo Association. Officials noted that as heroin becomes harder to find, addicts are switching to prescription medicines. The abuse is widespread, affecting children and adults across even the most remote areas of the state.

Authorities identified several alarming tactics used to mask the illegal trade. Criminals often swap bottle labels to hide the true contents of the syrup. Police have already seized bottles and made arrests. Some licensed medicine dealers face prosecution for irregularities in their procurement practices.

The crackdown has caused headaches for legitimate patients. Tighter restrictions mean people with actual medical needs struggle to fill valid prescriptions at local pharmacies. Despite these supply chain issues, the government remains committed to its hard line. "The government would take strict action against those misusing drug licences granted in good faith to profit from the sale of drugs liable to abuse," Lalrinpuii stated.

Minister Lalrinpuii directed the Excise and Narcotics department to push its ongoing investigation forward. She also tasked the Food and Drug Administration and the Central YMA with maintaining their oversight efforts to stop the flow of illicit pharmaceuticals.

Investigators have pinpointed a new breed of street-level agitators pushing these drugs. Dealers are now relying on individuals posing as medical representatives to move product through the ranks. These fake reps help push the supply into far-flung corners of the state.

The minister confirmed the crackdown has already yielded arrests of people masquerading as legitimate industry personnel. Authorities are pushing forward to expose how these actors penetrate the supply chain to dump controlled substances into local neighborhoods.
