Missing couple found dead in South West Khasi Hills

Shillong: A young couple vanished from a Nongjri market on September 26. They never made it home. Search teams scoured the woods for days but turned up nothing. Authorities finally received word from local villagers at 1 pm on Tuesday that two bodies lay in the Nongjri area.

The dead are Kop Lapang, 32, from Umsaw in Ri-Bhoi, and Aijingsuk Kharbani, 23, from Pungkung in East Khasi Hills. Relatives identified the pair on-site. South West Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police B Byrwa confirmed an FIR was filed at Mawsynram Police Station on September 28 after the couple disappeared at 3 pm.

The bodies were too badly decomposed to determine an immediate cause of death. Doctors performed an on-the-spot post-mortem exam Wednesday morning before releasing the remains for funeral rites. The SP noted, "The condition of the bodies made it difficult to ascertain the cause of death." Police are still digging into what happened to the pair.
