Shillong: Cabinet Minister Marcuise N Marak visited the Garo Labour Corps Cenotaph site in Tura on Monday. He arrived with members of the Preservation of Garo Arts, Culture and Heritage Sub-Committee and civil society leaders. They want the project finished fast.
This memorial honors ancestors who fought in the First World War in France. Local groups previously criticized the government for altering the site design. Officials now aim to restore the structure to its original form. Work continues under strict oversight.
Marak inspected the progress ahead of the upcoming Garo Labour Corps Day on July 16. He expects the site to be ready shortly. The minister remains confident in the current timeline.
“Ia biapo rikenggipa Cenotaph-ko a·paloni nigenchimode kamrang maming ong·kujaenga gita nika indiba ning·ao kam ka·anirangko nigenchimode kamrangni ta·rakako ma·sina man·a. Ia cenotaph-ko jasani gisepon matchotnaba dongaha,” Marak told reporters.
The minister praised the workers for their pace. The project serves as a key site for annual commemorations. Residents gather here every July to pay their respects to the fallen.
