Shillong: Meghalaya government officials confirmed the successful upgrade of 1,391 Lower Primary schools under the Mission Education initiative. Work continues on 216 additional sites. The state launched this program to overhaul 1,607 schools total. Currently, more than 86 percent of the work is complete.
Education remains the top spending priority for the state. Officials spent 1,000 crore rupees to build and repair classrooms, libraries, and toilets. The program targets LP, UP, secondary, and higher secondary schools across every district. Renovations include fixing walls, roofs, doors, and windows to ensure safer learning environments.
The project follows a phased rollout. Phase I delivered 191 LP and 7 UP schools. Phase II added another 100 LP buildings. Phase III covers 117 LP schools, while Phase IV currently invites tenders for 180 new LP and secondary sites. State records show that more than 2,000 total school buildings are part of the initiative. "Ia program-ni ning·o sorkari LP skulrang, UP skulrang, secondary aro higher secondary skulrangkoba man·chapenga," stated the government report regarding the scope of the project. Notable upgrades include the Mowkaiaw and Nogorpara government UP schools.
