Shillong: Food safety officials in Meghalaya confiscated a shipment of pointed gourds, locally known as patol, at a Shillong market on Friday. The seizure occurred after preliminary testing suggested the presence of unauthorized artificial coloring agents, which may have been used to make the vegetables appear fresher to customers.
Deputy Commissioner of Food Safety DBS Mukhim confirmed that samples have been sent to a laboratory to identify any potential contaminants. This inspection is part of ongoing efforts to monitor produce quality, which gained urgency following recent whistleblower reports from neighboring Assam regarding vegetable adulteration.
"A seizure has been made, and samples have been lifted for analysis. We will wait for laboratory reports before taking further action," Mukhim said. Authorities have pledged to initiate strict enforcement under the Food Safety and Standards Act if the laboratory results confirm that the gourds violate safety regulations.
Officials are continuing their surveillance across regional markets to curb food tampering. In the meantime, they have advised consumers to exercise caution and thoroughly wash all vegetables before cooking them.
