Shillong: Meghalaya launched a two-day training program in Shillong on June 5 to introduce advanced 3D prosthetic technology to the Northeast. The initiative brings together prosthetic and orthotic professionals to learn how to manufacture assistive devices using digital printing, with the goal of modernizing regional rehabilitation services.
Organized by the Office of the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, the project is a collaboration between the state's Social Welfare Department, the Pt. Deendayal Upadhyaya National Institute for Persons with Physical Disabilities, and Instalimb India Pvt Ltd. As part of the rollout, 12 amputees received custom 3D-printed limbs during the event held at the U Soso Tham Auditorium.
Social Welfare Minister Sanbor Shullai noted that the event highlights a shift toward using digital design and artificial intelligence to bridge gaps in healthcare. During the session, he stated, "The programme reflects efforts to strengthen rehabilitation services in the Northeast through technological innovation."
Shullai emphasized that building technical capacity among local professionals is vital for delivering affordable care to remote areas. The state government remains focused on integrating these modern manufacturing methods with ongoing welfare measures, including scholarships and transport support, to ensure equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.
