Shillong: The Meghalaya High Court wants fresh numbers on the narcotics trade. Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice W. Diengdoh ordered the state government to file a status report on drug cases in Police Bazar. This follows a public interest litigation filed by Mewaker Lyngdoh regarding the city's main commercial hub.
State lawyers will submit case data logged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act from January to the current date. The court set the next hearing for August 3. Previous filings included data from January 2025 through March 2026, alongside details on how authorities handle seized substances.
S.P. Mahanta, the lawyer for the petitioner, pressed the court for tougher action. He stated, "drug trafficking and peddling continue to pose a significant challenge in and around Police Bazar, Shillong's principal marketplace." The bench accepted a request for more time to compile the updated report.
