Meghalaya Government Designates Three Official Street Vending Zones in Shillong

Shillong: The Meghalaya Urban Affairs department has officially designated three street vending locations in Shillong. This move follows the Street Vendors Act of 2014 and aims to provide structured spaces for vendors while improving urban management across the city.

These zones include the ground floor of the Iew Mawlong Parking Lot, the area fronting the State Guest House at Ward’s Lake, and a government plot situated next to the Majestic Hotel in Polo. Officials approved these sites after receiving input from the Town Vending Committee and local vendors associations.

This initiative responds to a direct mandate from the High Court of Meghalaya, which ordered the state to establish clear boundaries for street commerce. The government expects these demarcated areas to protect the livelihoods of local traders while ensuring a more organized approach to street vending in Shillong.
