Shillong: Meghalaya just shipped a batch of Megha-1 turmeric to Singapore. IFAD President Dr. Álvaro Lario flagged off the load on Friday at the PRIME Hub of Eastern Ri-Bhoi Organic Farmer Producer Company Ltd in Bhoirymbong. The move marks a push to get local crops into global markets. Lario visited the state to review the Meghalaya Livelihoods and Access to Markets Project, known as Megha-LAMP.
This facility helps farmers add value to their crops through better processing and quality checks. The delegation also stopped at the Umwang Pyllun Integrated Village Cooperative Society Ltd in the Ri-Bhoi district. They checked on community groups growing ginger, bay leaves, and pineapples. The cooperative pushes for farm mechanization and collective marketing to boost income for women, youth, and local farmers.
Scientists at the ICAR Research Complex for the North Eastern Hill Region in Umiam created the Megha-1 variety. They developed it from the famous Lakadong type, specifically selecting it for high yields and disease resistance. The shipment proves local farm goods can compete abroad. Government officials and IFAD aim to build sustainable connections for rural producers. As Lario noted, these efforts aim at "connecting local farmers with international markets" through stronger organizations and better infrastructure.
