Shillong: Meghalaya officials rolled out 14 new air-conditioned diesel buses on July 3, marking the second phase of the Ka Bos Jong Ngi public transport service. The fleet expansion connects the Inter State Bus Terminus at Mawlai-Mawiong to Lad Smit. Umroi MLA Damanbait Lamare flagged off the vehicles at the ISBT site.
The service started in February with 15 buses running the IIM Shillong to Upper Shillong line. Lamare noted that these additional units help students and workers get around more easily. He said, "The additional buses would provide students and daily commuters with a more reliable and comfortable mode of transport."
These buses come with CCTV cameras, GPS tracking, mobile chargers, and digital ticketing systems. Secretary W.A.M. Booth Shadap confirmed these additions aim to reach areas previously left without reliable transit options. The state also added five electric buses in June under the PM eBus Sewa Scheme. Officials plan to pair these vehicle upgrades with better parking and tighter urban planning to cut traffic congestion across the region.
