Shillong: Meghalaya shed its status as the nation's worst-performing state in the latest Performance Grading Index. Education Ministry data shows the state climbed from Akanshi-3 to Akanshi-1, a two-grade jump in one year. The state boosted its score by 77.7 points to reach 525.7.
The state has gained 124 points since 2023. Officials rationalized the school network, shrinking the total count from 14,641 to 11,443 to sharpen resource management. Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui linked the shift to consistent policy reforms. "Such sustained year-on-year improvement places Meghalaya among the fastest improving states and Union Territories in the country under the PGI framework," he said.
Despite the momentum, Meghalaya remains at the bottom of the 36-state list. Chandigarh holds the top spot with 766 points. That represents a gap of over 240 points. Educators credit gains to better infrastructure and a new pay structure for teachers. The state now shares its tier with Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and several other regions.
