Shillong: President Droupadi Murmu awarded the prestigious Padma Shri to Meghalaya conservationist Hally War on May 25. The honor recognizes his decades of work preserving the state's iconic living root bridges, known locally as Jingkieng Jri.

A resident of Siej village in the East Khasi Hills, War learned the intricate art of guiding the aerial roots of rubber fig trees from his grandfather. What began as a childhood activity eventually became a vital mission to protect the natural structures that define his community. He continues to maintain several bridges while teaching younger generations how to care for the surrounding ecosystem.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma attended the ceremony and praised War for his quiet dedication and respect for the environment. Sangma noted that the award reflects the importance of safeguarding regional heritage and protecting nature. War himself has often emphasized that these structures are irreplaceable, noting that they can survive for centuries if properly maintained in the region's heavy monsoon climate.

The global significance of these bridges continues to grow as India works toward UNESCO World Heritage status for the Jingkieng Jri cultural landscape. Officials expect the site to be considered during the 2026-27 evaluation cycle.
