Meghalaya CM Vows Investigation Into Secret Land Deals Amid Uranium Fears

Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma pledged to probe reports of suspicious land deals in the Domiasiat region of South West Khasi Hills. Locals fear these transactions mask a secret push for uranium mining. Sangma rejected these claims entirely.

The government remains opposed to the project. "The issue has come before the government several times and has been rejected on each occasion," Sangma told reporters. He promised to check if state officials are truly involved.

The Khasi Students' Union is not waiting. KSU leaders met with the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council this week. They want an immediate stop to all land sales in the area. They believe powerful political figures are buying up property at inflated prices to feed exploration efforts.

KSU president Raymond Kharjana wants the council to change local laws. The union wants a total ban on selling or leasing land to any agency linked to mining. They also want tribal leaders to block investigators from the Atomic Minerals Directorate from entering the region. The group is pushing for a special council session to pass a formal resolution against the industry.
