Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Sunday. He led a delegation of church and community leaders to protest strict Foreign Contribution Regulation Act rules. The state worries proposed changes will break vital social programs. Schools, colleges, and hospitals across Meghalaya rely heavily on foreign funding. Rural areas face the biggest threat. These institutions provide essential care where government services fail to reach.
Sangma asked Shah to respect the unique situation of his state. He wants to ensure that honest groups keep working without federal interference. The group specifically requested that the Union Government ensure that "genuine institutions involved in public service are able to continue their activities without disruption."
Representatives from the Presbyterian Church of India, the North East India Christian Council, the Catholic Church of Shillong, and the Garo Baptist Convention joined the talks. Notable members included Rev. H. L. Myrsing, Rev. Dr. Meyu Changkiri, and Fr. Teiboklang Kharbani. The delegation expects the Home Ministry to weigh these concerns before moving forward with new mandates.
