Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma plans to unveil a strategic roadmap at the upcoming North Eastern Council (NEC) plenary meeting to position the Northeast as a unified tourism destination. As head of the high-level task force on regional tourism, Sangma argues that collective branding and regional cooperation are vital to fully capturing the sector's economic potential.
The annual plenary session, scheduled for June 4, will be chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who is expected to arrive in Shillong on Wednesday. The meeting brings together governors and chief ministers from across the region to address critical development priorities.
Discussions will center on actionable plans derived from recommendations made by various task forces. These groups were established by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region under Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia to focus on areas like trade, infrastructure, youth development, and tourism. Sangma highlighted the cross-state collaboration fostered by these panels, noting that representatives have worked together to create a cohesive development strategy for the region.
Beyond the plenary agenda, Sangma confirmed that Meghalaya will host several high-profile visits from Union ministers in the coming weeks. Union Health Minister JP Nadda is set to arrive in Shillong on June 5, followed by a visit from Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman later this month.
