Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma is taking urgent action to contain an African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak in the state. On Wednesday, he confirmed that officials have implemented strict limitations on the movement and trade of pigs within the affected districts to prevent the disease from spreading further.
Sangma acknowledged the severity of the situation and emphasized that his administration is working to bolster biosecurity protocols to protect the regional piggery sector. He noted that the government remains vigilant, as the current priority is to minimize the impact on local farmers and their livestock.
Beyond the immediate health crisis, Sangma is also focusing on regional development. He plans to unveil a comprehensive roadmap at the upcoming North Eastern Council plenary aimed at rebranding the Northeast as a single, unified tourism destination. As the leader of the regional task force on tourism, he argues that collective marketing will allow the eight states to leverage their combined strengths.
By shifting away from individual state branding, the proposed strategy seeks to establish a stronger identity for the entire region. Sangma believes this collaborative approach will unlock significant growth potential and create new opportunities for the tourism industry across Northeast India.
