Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma took a delegation of state church leaders to New Delhi on Sunday. They met Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss proposed changes to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act. The group fears new rules will hurt schools, colleges, and hospitals run by religious groups.
The delegation included Moderator Rev HL Myrsing from the Presbyterian Church of India and General Secretary Dr Meyu Changkiri from the North East India Christian Council. Fr Teiboklang Kharbani of the Shillong Archdiocese and Garo Baptist Convention Youth Director Durasal R Marak also joined the talks. These institutions provide essential services in rural areas.
Sangma explained how these religious centers drive literacy and social development across Meghalaya. He urged the federal government to ensure that any adjustments to the law do not create hurdles for community work. He wants the government to ensure that "iandakgipa institute-rangni kamrangko ka·anio maming champengani gri kamrangko ka·angkuna man·na gita cholrangko on·angkuchinaba" as the process moves forward.
